Mechanical design questions
Common questions about cost, timelines, CAD tools, IP ratings, and deliverables for custom mechanical design projects on electronic products.
How much does a mechanical project cost?
Mechanical project costs depend on enclosure complexity, materials, IP sealing and environmental requirements, manufacturing method (3D print, CNC, injection moulding), and whether tooling and DFM are in scope. Most mechanical projects sit in the five-figure range. Simple enclosures cost less. More demanding work runs higher. That covers high IP ratings, injection mould tooling design, multi-part assemblies, and precision or aerospace requirements. Show us what you're building and we'll come back with a scope and price. Get in touch.
How long does mechanical design take from concept to production-ready CAD?
Timelines depend on complexity, materials, and manufacturing method. A straightforward bracket or modified standard enclosure can be completed within weeks. A custom injection-moulded enclosure with gaskets, IP sealing, and full DFM review takes several months. That includes 3D-printed prototypes for fit and function validation before tooling is committed. Tooling and first-article inspection add further time. Get in touch for a tailored estimate after a short discovery conversation.
What CAD software do you use for mechanical design?
We design primarily in SolidWorks or Fusion 360. Both are industry standard for professional product development and injection-moulded part design. Native design files plus neutral STEP and IGES exports are handed over at the end of every project. You or any contract manufacturer can edit, tool, and produce the design without lock-in. We can also work in other CAD packages when a client requires.
Can you design IP-rated enclosures for outdoor, marine, or industrial use?
Yes. We design enclosures to IP54, IP65, IP67, IP68, and IP69 for outdoor, marine, agricultural, and industrial applications. That covers gasket and O-ring selection, sealing surface design, cable gland and connector specification, vent integration (such as Gore membranes for pressure equalisation), and UV-stable material choice.
What files and deliverables do I receive when the mechanical design is complete?
You receive a full production package. This includes native SolidWorks or Fusion 360 files, neutral STEP and IGES exports, 2D manufacturing drawings with GD&T, a BOM with supplier and part numbers, assembly drawings and instructions, material and finish specifications, and tooling notes for the chosen manufacturing method (injection moulding, sheet metal, CNC, or die casting). The exact list is agreed up front. New IP created during the project transfers to you on payment. Each party keeps their pre-existing IP. We can set up licensing arrangements when needed. Of course, if we're managing production for you, we handle all of this as well. You'll also receive the finished product.

Want us to handle the whole product?
Mechanical design is just one piece. If you don't want the headache of managing hardware, firmware, mechanical, and manufacturing separately, we handle the entire product development under one roof.
Other ways we can help
Mechanical design is just one part of what we do. Explore our other services.
